We all caught the plague a few weeks ago, the kids rebounded first but Brian and I are still cough cough coughing. Finally a little bit of energy returned this week though, so laundry is caught up, the kitchen has been tamed a bit and some of the house chaos is sorted. Good enough.
Spring starts tomorrow, so the timer on my winter to-do list is up. Did I finish unpacking the house? Nope. Little bits of progress have been made, more is needed, but it's just not the top priority.
What is? The geese. Getting them in January before we were fully ready was not the best choice, but I don't regret it. They're full size now, full of attitude as well, and pretty much ready to be outside. The weather hasn't agreed though. Maybe they'd be okay with some freezing temperatures, but I'm not experienced enough to feel okay with that. So, they've spent most of their first three months inside, either the house or the shed, heated and spoiled.
This weekend, hopefully, Brian and I will wrap up the last couple items. Then I'm watching for no more freezing temperatures overnight.
Meanwhile, the ducklings are shipping NEXT WEEK. They'll start in the house, then move to the shed, and then outside with the geese. Before they move in, we're putting up overhead netting because our aerial predator pressure is intense. According to our neighbor, the hawks will pick up chickens while you're standing right next to them. 😳
Meanwhile, I've turned the other side of the shed into the grow room, and have two full sets of shelves loaded with plant starts. Most everything has been started at this point, except the cukes, squash, melons, and pumpkins. I'll start the sunflower successions the second week in April. I need to get that field ready and keep the deer out.
Overall, I got to about half my winter list, but the biggest priorities were covered and I'm happy with the progress. Bring on Spring!
